An Overview |
The teething process can be unsettling for baby and parents, especially if you've established a successful sleep routine. Did you know that your baby developed teeth while still in the womb? These teeth lay dormant in the gums until they are ready to break through. Breastfeeding can delay the arrival of teeth which means that when they do show up they are stronger and healthier. It is important to remember that your baby is unique so try not to compare with other babies too closely ... this is good advice for every aspect of your baby's development. While comparisons can be a good early warning of a problem they can also mean you wish your baby on to the next mile stone with out enjoying what is happening now. |
The Signs Of Teething |
Baby is not herself/himself ... seems distressed or irritable Baby is putting everything in her/his mouth ... this may include trying to bite you but don't get cross with your baby as this isn't a sign of aggression merely a means of pain relief Baby is dribbling excessively Baby can't settle down to sleep Baby has flushed cheeks Dirty nappies are especially unpleasant Remember that your baby could show signs of teething |
What Can I Do To Make Teething More Bearable For My Baby? |
TLC - Don't underestimate the healing power of a cuddle Baby chews everything he/she can because the pressure on his/her gums can ease the pain plus cold can help numb the pain so combine the two with a teething ring that has been in the fridge If baby has got a sore neck or chest from dribbling use a barrier of petroleum jelly to ease the situation. You can use a bib to catch the dribbling and change it regularly but don't leave your baby unattended wearing a bib (for example at nap time) and don't leave a wet bib on Rub your baby's gums with a pain relief gel. The combination of the gentle rubbing and the pain relief ingredients should ease the pain. Always read the label on medicine very carefully to make sure it is suitable for your baby and stick to the stated dose DO NOT rub whisky on to your baby's gums If your baby loves his/her dummy and has teeth make sure you use a dummy which has been orthodontically approved We have an advice page for parents with babies who are persistently crying - click here |
