Single Parents
You may find yourself in the position of being a single parent because
your relationship has broken down or because your partner has died
If you are a single parent because your partner has died ...

This is a shock, and unless your partner has been ill for some time it will not be something you have planned for. You will be grieving as well as trying to deal with single parent issues. Talk to some one you trust and if you feel over whelmed talk to your GP.

Try to enjoy your baby.

If you are a single parent because your relationship has broken up ...

Bad relationships are physically and mentally exhausting so you may find you feel more able to cope now you finally know where you stand. As the sole carer you know it's down to you and what you need to do.

Babies, and older children, pick up on the bad atmosphere so now that you are not enduring a constant daily battle with your ex they will feel happier and more secure.

Now that you are a single parent remember yourself ...

Try to go out during the day to give yourself chance to see other people. Join local parent and baby groups or find a regular coffee morning for single parents.

You may find it difficult to have a social life but try to find a baby sitter and go out with your friends occasionally.

You'll be surprised how many people there are in your situation and it is helpful to build up your own network of people who know how you feel with out you even having to say a word. You could form a group, meet at each other's houses, baby sit for each other and organise days out for you and your babies.

Now that you are a single parent be practical ...

Make a will and specify who you want to look after your child if any thing were to happen to you.

Make sure you have life insurance or critical illness cover. Look in to which option is most suitable for you.

Money will be an issue so look in to your options and make sure you are claiming any benefits that you are entitled to.
