BreastFeeding Your Baby
Points Of Interest About Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding means that your baby receives a balanced diet and should be more resistant to infections.

When your baby is first born she won't need a lot of food so your body produces colostrum for the first few days. The colostrum contains the anti bodies your baby needs in a nutritionally balanced form.

As milk replaces the colostrum you may feel a little down which is a hormonal response and is perfectly normal. It will pass.

Your milk is split in to foremilk, which is watery to help quench your baby's thirst, and hind milk which is creamy yellow and fills your baby's hunger.

You should alternate the breast that you start from each feed to keep the milk flowing well and to help stop your breasts getting sore. Tie a ribbon to your bra strap to help you remember.

Breastfeeding is a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your baby. If you choose to breast feed remember that dad might feel a little left out and make time for him to have special one to one time with baby too.

Make sure you have a drink with in reach while you are breastfeeding your baby as it's not uncommon for you to feel really thirsty.

Stroke your baby's cheek or hold her hand while breastfeeding and talk gently and quietly to her. Your baby will enjoy the sound of your voice.

Remember that what you eat will be reflected in your milk, especially if you have strongly flavoured food.

Mum's welfare while breastfeeding ...
Take the time to eat. It may sound like common sense but often it's tempting to skip a meal when you're rushing about ... don't. Eating properly will be reflected in your milk and help to stop you feeing too tired.

Make sure you drink plenty, especially just before and just after you breast feed, otherwise you will feel dehydrated.

Try to sleep well ... while this is easier said than done it is also good advice. Catch a nap when you can, if your baby is asleep then sleep yourself.
